HILL OF TARA

The Hill of Tara, Teamhair na Ri, in the royal county of Meath, was once the ancient seat of power in Ireland. 142 kings are said to have reigned there throughout history. According to ancient Irish religion and mythology, Tara was the sacred dwelling place of the gods, and the entrance to the other world. Saint Patrick is said to have journeyed to Tara in order to confront the ancient religion of the pagans at their most powerful site.

It is claimed that on a clear day you can see features in half the counties of Ireland from atop the Hill of Tara. In the distance can be seen the white quartz frontage of the prehistoric passage tomb of Newgrange, and further north lies the Hill of Slane, where according to legend Saint Patrick lit his Pascal fire prior to his visit to Tara in 433 AD.
